This is a great, easy to read book on how to have the relationship "you want and deserve" with your Veterinarian. As it says there are a dozen reasonable things you can expect from your vet, including discussing finances to round the clock care for your companion.
There is also a section on what your vet expects from you! From arriving on time to letting the staff know if your dog is aggressive.. It is all there and I highly recommend the book.
It is a great read on its own or as a companion to Dr. Kay's first book, Speaking for Spot.

Ok so it might not be fasinating to everyone but I assure you that this is to ME and to anyone who has a dog with canine Addisons. This drug literally has saved my boys life. For nayone who knows us they know he started out on Florinef at 0.4mg a day and then went to 2.2mg a day and I said ENOUGH, there has to be a way to get percorten into Canada and I found it!

(desoxycorticosterone pivalate, or DOCP) INJECTABLE SUSPENSION

DOCP: Developed to save human lives

Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a relatively uncommon condition, first described in 1885 by Dr. Thomas Addison, the "Father of Endocrinology." Although Addison’s disease is not well known, some very well-known people have suffered from it. Undoubtedly, the most famous was President John F. Kennedy.
In patients with Addison’s disease, the adrenal glands do not function properly and the body is unable to produce normal amounts of certain hormones – the mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. The disease can be fatal if not treated. During President Kennedy’s lifetime, the only known treatment was a medication called desoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP, trade name PERCORTEN®). President Kennedy’s life depended on injections of this product every 25 days.

In the late 1960’s, an oral drug was developed for Addison’s disease in humans and doctors stopped prescribing DOCP injections. Over the next 20 years, sales fell so low that the manufacturer, Ciba-Geigy, decided to discontinue it. When the company notified their distributors of this decision, they suddenly heard an uproar from veterinarians who had been using the product to treat dogs with Addison’s disease! The veterinarians reported that the results were exceptional and that dogs’ lives would be at risk if the product were to be discontinued. This was all new information to Ciba-Geigy. At that time, they had no idea that the product was being used to treat dogs.
Ironically, the canine form of Addison’s disease touched another First Family: President Reagan’s daughter had a dog that suffered from it, and was being treated with regular injections. The presidential family also expressed concern when notified that the supply of DOCP could be discontinued.
An act of compassion

The FDA had no studies on the safety or effectiveness of DOCP in dogs and therefore could not allow it to be labeled and sold as a canine medication. However, the FDA knew that, without it, the dogs that had been using it could die. In order to supply those dogs, the FDA asked Ciba-Geigy Animal Health (now Novartis) – a company that had no products for dogs at the time – to conduct a research trial in which the drug could be made available to select patients. Ciba-Geigy applied for an “Investigational New Animal Drug” (INAD) status and was granted permission for a “compassionate use” only status, allowing them to provide it to those that needed it. The people at Ciba-Geigy Animal Health understood the very limited market potential for the product. But, knowing the life-saving nature of the medication, they felt there was only one choice—they had to do it.
At the outset of the trials, Ciba-Geigy gathered all the available DOCP from their facilities worldwide, and shipped it to their researchers in Greensboro, North Carolina. At that time (1989) the whole world’s entire supply of DOCP was kept in a small container secured at their distribution facility.
Research phase

For nine years, Ciba-Geigy / Novartis maintained DOCP in “investigational status” as a not-for-profit research drug, studying more than 1,000 clinical cases. Scientists learned a great deal about canine Addison’s disease. Among other things, they observed that it is more prevalent among females than males, and is seen most frequently among mixed breeds, Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, Great Danes, West Highland Terriers and Rottweilers**
In 1998, the FDA granted Novartis marketing approval, allowing them to manufacture, sell and distribute DOCP under the brand name PERCORTEN-V* (the “V” indicates “veterinary”). It is the only drug approved for the treatment of canine Addison’s disease but, because the disease is diagnosed infrequently (1-3 cases per 1000 dogs**), the demand for PERCORTEN-V is small.

It has been demonstrated that PERCORTEN-V is well tolerated with a low incidence of side effects. In a small percentage of dogs, depression, excessive thirst and urination, digestive, skin and coat changes, weakness, and injection site reactions (pain, abscesses) may occur. Some of these effects may resolve with adjustments in dose or interval of PERCORTEN-V or concomitant glucocorticoid administration. It should not be used in pregnant dogs or dogs that are suffering from congestive heart disease.

A complex manufacturing process

PERCORTEN-V is difficult and costly to manufacture. It begins with a hormone, extracted from natural sources, and modified through a complex chemical process. Quality control on pharmaceutical hormones is always critical, because hormones have such a profound effect on the body. Every production lot must be rigorously tested to meet strict standards, with almost no tolerance for error, as variances may require an entire lot to be destroyed.
Production of PERCORTEN-V is a challenging process. Novartis has worked with several different production facilities in its efforts to manufacture the product more efficiently. In addition, because Addison’s disease affects a relatively small number of dogs, only a small amount of PERCORTEN-V is needed each year. This low volume, together with the high production costs, results in a high cost per unit. PERCORTEN-V accounts for a small percentage of total sales and profits for Novartis Animal Health. However, despite this, Novartis is committed to maintaining the supply of this drug for those dogs that depend on it.

A delicate balance

The outward signs of canine Addison’s disease - vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, loss of appetite, and depression - are so common among dogs that they might signal a whole host of other canine diseases. An astute veterinarian who suspects Addison’s disease will perform blood tests in order to make a definitive diagnosis.

By law, PERCORTEN-V may be used only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. This is extremely important for the well being of the dog. The chemical balance affected by the disease is so delicate that Addisonian patients must be carefully monitored on an ongoing basis. A veterinarian may sometimes see the need to adjust the dosage of PERCORTEN-V, followed by a physical exam and laboratory tests to see how the dog is responding.

The happy ending to the story is that with regular medication, diligent monitoring, and ongoing veterinary care, dogs with Addison’s disease can live a long, happy, active life.

Chauncy 8 weeks post ACL surgery

This is Chauncy at 8 weeks post Traditional ACL Repair. He is still on restrictions. He only goes outside on leash and we are still not allowing him to do stairs but he was cleared for stairs 2 weeks ago. But since we have the ramp there is no reason for him to do stairs. He is doing two 20 mins walks a day although that won't happen today, too much rain. He got a short one before the sky opened up and we beat it inside..

Learning new things with my camera..

Aselin spent the day with me and we had a girls day. We had lunch with Lois and then we went to the beach and I got to practice a new technique with my camera called Bokeh.. When my friend Mariah posted some pictures on her site and they are totally awesome by the way, I loved the faded technique she used for the background.. You can see some of her pics at Bunch We Lunch with on facebook. She has spread her wings and is doing family pics now as well as the amazing dog pictures. She is in Toronto and I so wish she was closer to capture my Lab crew..
Anyway I spent some time practicing today and it came out pretty well I think. Of course having a cute subject really helps.. Next time I will try it out with the pups..

Chauncy's Progress

I took this video on Sunday day 13 post op. He did fantastic even if I do say so myself. He doesn't do this well all the time but he is making great progress.

Outside on his potty breaks he does really well. Inside he tends to keep it up more than he does outside but that is normal.

The last day or so I have been able to stay in the living room with him rather than stay in the bedroom. He is doing great but he is one sad looking puppy and I feel guilty but he is not allowed to jump up on anything so until we get the all clear from the surgeon he stays on his beds.. or mine since it is on the floor...

Can I please get on the couch beside you... I love you!!

9 days Post Op

I think Chauncy's incision looks GREAT for 9 days post op. I wore the soft e-collar on him until I was sure he would leave it alone and he has so goodbye collar.. He is doing great being confined while I am at work. Bill takes him out for potty breaks on a leash. He is using his leg a bit outside but less so inside the house. He doesn't move around the house much at all. So for now that's good I guess. No walks yet, just potty breaks..

Well Chauncy is doing much better today, he has made steady progress this week. The swelling is almost completely gone and the incision looks great!

I was putting a mattress in the living room and sleeping there with him and the other pups. I covered the furniture with laundry baskets so he could not get up on them but he kept getting up and standing by the bedroom door which was closed of course as we don't want him jumping up on anything. I had to put him in the gated area anyway so I finally decided on Thursday to turn my bedroom into a crate.. I took the mattress off the frame ( well cleaned out what was under the bed first ) and put an area rug down on the wood floor to keep him from slipping and covered the rest of the floor with rubber backed mats. Now my evenings are being spent in the bedroom with the pups.. It's safe and I don't have to worry about him jumping up on anything so I don't have to sleep with one eye open.
Going to be a long summer!

ACL modified Flo Technique

Chauncy had the modified Flo Technique yesterday to repair his ACL which he ruptured on Jun 11th. The radiographs at the time of surgery showed minimal degenerative joint change and the expectation is he will develop arthritis and only time will tell how much.

He was not a happy camper at all on the short trip home.. He hurt and he let us know it. He developed diarrhea about 1/2 hr after getting home and that was certainly not pleasant for him. I suspect from intra-operative injectable NSAIDs which he was not supposed to have because of his reaction to them especially injectable anafen in the past. It is routinely given so I think it got slipped in. We had a rough first night with only Tramadol for pain. I iced him non stop last night, just rotated the sites so not to do any tissue damage. That helped, I know it did.. Thanks Karen.. if not for you I would not have started it when I did.

This picture is was taken just after I brought him home last night, he is a lot more swollen today.
With regular Tramadol and hourly icing he is doing better today. Emma and Aselin both came to help me look after our boy. Thank heavens for great grand kids no matter how young they are.

The Ruff Wear Harness I got when he injured his leg has been very helpful and I highly recommend it for anyone who has a dog with an acl injury.

Tomorrow is surgery day

Well tomorrow is surgery day for Chauncy.. I am looking forward to it and not looking forward to it.. We have had a terrible time with the NSAIDS, he just does not do well on them at all and so far Anafen, metacam and previcox have caused him diarrhea and vomiting. I had to stop the previcox, the diarrhea just got too much and that is the last thing he needs after surgery. I had to increase his tramdaol dose last night and iced him up several times but he was more comfortable at least. It is easy to tell when he is in pain as he starts to lick his knee and then takes it in his mouth, and will refuse to get up and go out when I take the other dogs. He won't even move when I hold his leash up.. I hate this, hate seeing him in pain.

ACL surgery

Well the surgeon confirmed what our Vet said and we booked Chauncy for repair surgery next Monday. We are going with the traditional repair. Chauncy's weight is perfect, I have the ramp in, rubber backed mats are all down and he is being crated to lesson the risk of damage to his joint. Rob feels he is a good candidate for this repair and he has done lots of these and I trust him.. Keep my boy in your thoughts.

ACL issues

Poor Chauncy, my Vet is pretty sure he ruptured his ACL, he has the classic drawer sign. It is a little more than a week and he is still not weight bearing on it. He is using his toes to balance with it a bit though. We have an appointment with the surgeon on Monday to see what he thinks and see how soon we can get it fixed it that is indeed what he thinks is needed.
We had to stop the NSAIDS as he had a nasty side effect, diarrhea and then vomiting from the metacam and also from anafen. Paula put him on tramadol and he seems ok with that. You can tell so easily when he needs it, he licks and then will chew at his knee.. So I am trying to prevent that by giving it morning and evening. He is spending his days in the crate and he is doing so well with that.

Bill hurt his leg yesterday and spent hrs in the ER, so is on crutches doubt the crutches will last long, he hates them.. We were supposed to build a better ramp today since it looks like we will need it long term. So with Bill's directions I am using the chop saw and it is looking pretty good! Just waiting for the drill to charge up so I can finish putting it together.

Hard to get a picture of him but you can see he is holding it up. He is totally non weight bearing. I am worried he blew his ACL out.
I took the dogs all for a swim like I have done several thousands times and they all ran ahead and by the time I caught up a the wharf he was already limping.. 30 seconds out of my sight, and of course it was Sat. afternoon. So crate rest, pain meds and icing. I got a Web Master Harness or rather my husband drove to Enfield for it. It was either that or wait 3 weeks for one to come from the US. It is a very good harness and will allow me to get him in and out of the car easier and support his leg. I have a Vet appointment tomorrow with Paula so we will see. I am really hoping for a soft tissue injury!!!
He is being such a good boy and is doing fine in the crate even though we have not used one for years..

Dog Philosophy

If you live by these dog rules, you will be a happier person!
There's a lot we humans can learn from dogs. If you live your life by the same philosophy that dogs do, you will be much better off in life. In the wild, animals fight only for two things, not a fancy car, not clothes or jewelry, they just fight for food or a mate, everything else they get after that is just pure happiness.

1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
3. When loved ones come home, always run and greet them.
4. When it's in your best interest, always practice obedience.
5. Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
6.Take naps and always stretch before rising.
7. Run, romp and play daily.
8. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
9. Be loyal.
10. Never pretend to be something you're not.
11. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
12. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
13. Delight in the simple joys of a long walk.
14. Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
15. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
16. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
17. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
18. No matter how often you are criticized, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.

Didn't I tell you that a dog with Canine Addison's Disease can do Anything!!

Aidan the dog with Canine Addison's disease competes in the AKC National Agility Championship in Lexington Virgina.

I am including some notes that Karen wrote on her Facebook page about Aidan's run at the Nationals.

"Aidan walked in like he owned the place, and paid heed to nothing but his tug, his mom, and the rabbit meat in my pocket. Same ol' Aidan, no matter what. A dog of his caliber is rare, priceless."

We stepped to the start line, and Aidan waited for the signal, and handled as well, or better, than ever before. Too bad I didn't!

I pushed him past jump 3, and after checking in with me, he proceeded to the tunnel.

We regrouped and finished what I felt was one of the best runs ever. I was proud to be show casing my little whippet.

No problem with the weave pole entrance, running A frame was perfect.

Every turn was graceful and efficient. I couldn't have asked for better.

I felt like we were dancing, our bodies practically singing with motion inspired harmony. Our time was respectable, considering the error, and I was left thinking of what could of been, but happy as well with what was.

Aidan was diagnosed with Canine Addison's disease just over a year ago. His Mom Karen is incredibly devoted to her furkids and was devastated when she diagnosed Aidan with Primary Typical Addison's disease ( yes Karen is a Vet ). She figured his agility career was over and she knew how much he loved it. Karen sought out the Canine Addison's Support Group on Yahoo and we quickly changed her mind about what Aidan could do.. She switched Aidan from Florinef to percorten and has never looked back.

When I asked Karen if I could post Aidan's pictures on my blog, her reply was, "Absolutely, I want all to know that these are awesome dogs that just happen to have Addison's."

Karen also has some video of Aidan run at the Nationals that I will put up as soon as I have it.

I rescued a Human Today...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. Yes, I could save one.

Letter to our Dogs!

Letter To The Dog
And all of us, who understand that with love comes the sacrifice of certain things, including privacy, sanity and carpets.

I love you!

I really do.
You are my light, my life and my ray of sunshine on the cloudiest day.

There are a few things you should know, though.

The toilet will NOT pull me in, and there is no secret exit from the bathroom. I do not need you to guard me when I go to the bathroom.

I can finish an entire meal, without your help. I promise!

I put your food in a bowl, because you weren't raised in a barn and I want your food clean, healthy and free of disease, you do not need to spread it all over the floor, before you eat it.

I truly value that you want to share with me, but please, do not share your dead rabbit, bird, rodent, opossum, chicken or other 'little critters' with me at 3 in the morning.
And do not hide them for later, they won't be there.

I do not require you to bring me water in your mouth. You do not need to dribble water on my face, my lap, my head, my legs or my arms. Nor do you need to spit a mouthful of water in my lap, while I am on the toilet. If I want water, I can fill the glass. I do NOT need you to bring me water, just because you drink from the toilet and I am currently sitting on it.

I do not need your slimy cow hoof or rawhide in the bed, I can sleep just fine without chewing on something, even if you can't.The bed, it is NOT a trampoline.
I do not need you to roll your brother/sister on my back, it does not substitute for a massage.

I am sleeping. I do not need you to investigate my face, kiss me, groom me or walk on my hair to know you are there. I feel you in my heart all the time.
I understand that you want to sleep under the covers. It is not necessary to dig me out from under the covers, to alert me to the fact that you want under the blankies.
Pick a blanket and get under it.
There is NO blanket monster, it really is my hand. After 5 years, I think you would know this. It does NOT need to die, be dug out from under the blankets or have your teeth wrapped around it or your claws in it.

If I wanted the bed moved, I would move it. Ramming your brother or sister full speed into the bed, is not the way we move furniture.

The couch and love seat are OURS. We share it. You do not have to sit on my head when I sit on the love seat. There is room for both of us. It is not necessary to sit on my lap, the moment I sit down. You weigh 60 pounds, or more, depending on which one of you it is. I need to get my breath before you sit on me.I do require oxygen to live. Your snout in my mouth is not a source of oxygen.

The couch, like the bed, IS NOT a trampoline.

You get dirty, I understand that. You enjoy being dirty.
You do not need to wipe your feet on my leg.
You do not need to step on my feet with your, to show me how dirty you are.
Believe me, I know you are a mud wallering piglet.
I love you, dirt and all.
I understand that the carpet will never be same color again.
I realize you believe muddy foot prints on the floor are works of art, so do I!
I don't believe they need to be shared with my lap.

"Talking" to me is part of your nature.
I understand this. I talk to you. I sing to you. I howl to you, mostly to watch you try to howl. Talking to me, an hour after I get in bed, is NOT necessary. You can tell me when we get up. Telling me the whole story the moment I walk in the house is GREAT, telling me the whole story in the middle of the night, is not!

The great outdoors, is great!!! We both love it.
I do not need to hear about the leaf that drifted across the yard.
The bird that landed in your yard, does not require a call to arms for the entire house.
The noisy truck driving down the road, is not an imminent danger.
The car that pulled into our driveway might be.

I realize the meter reader is your friend. You think he's great. You talk to him. He likes you. Great! I'm glad you don't think he should die! I'm sure he does too. I do not need you to run in and out the dog door in a frenzy, alerting 3 counties to the fact that the meter reader came to see you and he has treats!

Speaking of the dog door, it is there, because I think you need to pee when I'm not right there. I know that sometimes... "holding it" isn't an option.
It is not a revolving door. It is not there so you can admire the great outdoors, while keeping your ass warm as cute as it is.
When you go out the dog door, take your entire body with you, this includes your tail. We are not heating or cooling the entire world. *(now I know what my mother meant about the door)
Three of you will never fit through the dog door at the same time. Even if it amusing to watch... Your sister is getting older, it is not fun to trap her outside in a storm. Back up and let her in the dog door, she can't come in, while you're standing with your shoulders through the dog door.

Finally, Personal space is just that, personal.
My boobs are not a step to help you get further in my face.

I brush my teeth, with a toothbrush, your tongue is not for cleaning my mouth.

I do not need my eyeballs licked, ever.

I appreciate your tender loving care, but I use a kleenex to blow my nose, not your tongue.

I do love your kisses but can you limit the French kissing..

I assure you, nothing has changed since the last time I changed clothes, I do not need supervision and the clothing does not eat me.

If I am on the toilet, there is nothing to investigate. I let you go to the bathroom by yourself, please let me. If I am watching you go, there is a reason for it. I will not run up and stick my nose in your business.

Dad pays attention to you the minute he walks in the door and so do I.

We both love you kiss you and pet you. Just because we pay attention to each other does not mean we have forgotten you are there. We do not need help to give each other a kiss. And your Dad touching me, is in no way an affront to the attention he gives you.

We love you, like no other. Each and every one of you is special to us, in your own special way.

We will always share our home, our couch, our bed and our food.

We will always make sure you have what you need to be healthy, happy and well adjusted.

We will always make time for you, even when there isn't any.

We put you first in our lives and look after you each and every day before we look after ourselves... Ok ok Dad gets his coffee first but I don't, I look after you before anything..

Upcoming Vacation

Well it is almost that time, and I so need a vacation. We are heading to Cozumel on the 9th of March for two weeks. Emma is coming with is and we are meeting Maddie, Steven, Desmond and Danika in Toronto and flying down to Coz together. Then on the 12th Angie, Steven and Aselin are coming for a week.
It will be so good to have the whole family together in such a lovely place..
I get to see the grandkids all in one place..

The pups are going to the pet sitter and even though I feel guilty about leaving them I know they will be well looked after. Raider is finally doing better, no diarrhea in over a week, the new food seems to have done the trick. Will still keep him on the antibiotics while we are gone just to be safe.

Work has been absolutely crazy busy and I so need a break. 5 Sleeps!!!

MacBook Pro

As a diehard PC user I never in my wildest dreams thought I would say I liked a mac.. I work on them at work, fix them but have never really had one to "use" long term. Now I do, work gave me a new MacBook Pro to use for work.. I do like it. Now that was hard to say, I never expected to say that at all. I LOVE the backlit keyboard. There are a couple of annoying things but that could be the user..
Now I cannot manage my Novell networks at school with it so I will have to get windows 7 to put on it to dual boot it because I must be able to manage Novell and I have no intention of carrying two laptops around.

Anyone else out there switch to Mac from PC??

Well looks like we are making up for the snow that we haven't had much of this year.. The pups love it and would stay out all day as long as I stayed out.. It is light and fluffy now but may not stay that way. It started yesterday and won't stop they tell us until sometime early in the morning..

Emma started taking obedience classed with Raider at Ditto's Canine Learning Centre
She is in 4H and began their obedience classes with him but they use the choker chain to train with. Since that is not a positive training method and there is no way anyone is putting a choker chain on any of my dogs I signed Emma up for classes. She is doing great! Raider is doing a great job with her as well Here are a few pictures form the second night on classes.

Many of us know they come from Puppy Mills but many do not know about the dog auctions that provide the breeding dogs. Dr. Nancy Kay, author of "Speaking For Spot", recently wrote a blog post on Dog Auctions. Please check it out..

Every Puppy no matter how cute that you buy from a Pet Store means another one will immediately take it's place. The lives that the breeding dogs live are horrendous. The only way to STOP or even put a dent in this business is to NOT EVER buy another Puppy from a Pet Store or ONLINE. If you want a puppy or dog check out your local Shelter or talk to people like your Vet who will know the responsible breeders. Often Shelters have pure bred dogs as well but remember for every dog you get from a Shelter you save two! The one you rescue and the one that gets to takes its place at the Shelter.

I saw this posted on facebook last night and thought I would put it up on my blog.

The Prayer of St. Francis, This Year, Save One, Foster One, Rescue One Dog

My goal this year is to do more for the local Shelter, SHAID Tree, ( Sheltering Helpless Animals in Distress ). They are a low kill shelter and it would be so nice to make it a no kill shleter. They are a small shelter but do an amazing job. We got Simon from them. I have volunteered in a limited way there the last few years, fixing a computer, helping out at the Giant yard sale etc. but that's not enough. It's not that I don't do volunteer work, helping Addison's Dogs is a huge part of my life, but now it's time to get more involved with SHAID. I cannot take in anymore pets but there are ways I can help out.

So what are you going to do to make pawsitive change this year? Give it up, put it out there and let the world know your plans. It all starts with 1 person!

I also plan to start running again but I need the motivation to start. I so ~~loved~~ it and when I busted up my foot last summer it was easy to just stop and not get back to it in any serious way.. read I totally wimped out on starting up again..

Romping through 2010

It was a good year but where did 2010 go? Seriously... As I get older the faster it goes.

We had a new furkid join our family in May, Simon or "Mr. Simon" as all the children now call him. He has fit into the family like a glove.

We lost a very good friend in Sept, George I think of you every day. Don't worry we are looking after Lois and Molly!

There was new life for our family.
We were blessed with a beautiful granddaughter in November, Danika Jade Andrews. Two other great nieces and 1 great nephew all since August.

The furkids are all doing well. Chauncy had surgery to remove a tumour on his foot that turned out to be non-cancerous. Raider continues to rock our world and Addison's has not slowed him down one bit. Caley our senior lady is just perfect and wants everyone to know it. Tramp at almost 20 yrs. is sleeping a lot more but still eating and drinking fine. She put Simon in his place last week when he was annoying her.. Was kind of good to see her a little feisty.

Here is hoping next year will be as kind to us.

Christmas Eve with family and friends

We have a long standing Christmas tradition of gathering for a lobster dinner on Christmas Eve. There was plenty of lobster as you can see.. and enough left for a nice yummy chowder.

Aselin had her first Lobster last year and now you cannot get it out of the shell fast enough for her. She is an Andrews for sure... Now we just need to work on her Daddy and get him to eat some, as you can see he sadly has "steak" on his plate.

Lois joined us this year and after dinner Aselin has her helping to put a puzzle together. Aselin told Lois she did a "good job".

Not all our family was able to be here, this year miles separate us but "miles do not separate our hearts". Love and miss you Maddie, Steven, Desmond and Danika, see you in March!!

Well I finally decided I better get some wrapping done, I mean it is the 23rd. I got everything together, figured I would get it done quickly while the pups were all asleep in the living room.. Shelter Pups

It has been a crazy couple of weeks at work, so busy in the evening I haven't been able to catch up at all.

Emma and I volunteered at the SHAID animal shelter at their Open House and she met the rats and the bunny and she was in heaven. I however left the rats along and stuck to the pups...
As I said it has been busy but today I took time out after work to go to the shelter and walk Gus.. I know I forgot my camera so no pictures. I met Gus at the Open House as he had just come in. He was rail thin, each rib stuck out with nothing but skin covering them.
He is such a nice boy. He was neutered on Tuesday so will soon be ready for a new home. He walked so nicely on the leash, no pulling at all. He will make someone a wonderful companion.

There is a little beagle there named Miles and I spent some time playing with him.. His owners gave him up because they said, "he was a handful". The only handful he is, is when he is sitting on your lap and you are cuddling him.. he is a wonderful little boy..

It was nice to take some time and just play with some pups that need some loving... I feel better tonight for it... I hope the pups enjoyed it as much as I did..

When I came home my crew all gave me the once over, and then after they ate really gave me a going over.. I think they felt I had been out cheating on them..

Well I have been slack about posting but in my defense I was away visiting my family and then I got sick.. 2 weeks and just starting to feel better..

We had a great trip ( except for the getting sick part ). I got to spend a lot of time with my grandchildren which was great. We spent a couple of days in Niagra Falls at a hotel connected to an indoor waterpark which was fun..

Desmond loved the slide.. Although Daddy wanted to take him on the big ones... Next time Dad.

Bath Time

I was hoping for a nice Sunny day to bath the dogs because then I can take them for a run and they dry off so much quicker. My furkids are all Labs but they do not enjoy a bath and I swear they know when I am getting ready to bath them, well shower them really..
I get right in the walk in shower with them and it is much easier than a tub for me.
Although raider is quite the escape artist but he only half got away once on me this time.
Now Chauncy went first and he tried everything to get out of it, cute looks, pleading, sorrowful eyes, bringing me a small towel as if to say he only needed his face and paws washed...

Can we talk about this Mom??? Please.

But I don't want to come over there, you want to torture me with the soap and water..

Now after I showered Chauncy and towelled him off I gathered up the next ~~victim~~ pup and showered him, too wet now to get the camera going as I am doing this by myself. The I finish up with Caley and then ~~hose down~~ I mean clean up the bathroom and throw the huge pile of towels in the washer. Then head for my room to get some dry clothes and low and behold who is all curled up in my bed.. Chauncy made his bed ( meaning he rooted around until he had all the bed clothes dug up) and made himself all comfy and cosy.
Now considering I had just changed the sheets, from where I stood this wasn't that funny.. The bed was wet to the mattress... So more laundry... It is a little more funny today..

Raider celebrates 4 years with Addison's and a life lost.....

Well 4 years ago I was sitting in the ER with Raider wondering what the Hell was wrong with my boy. We had only had him a short time and he was now very ill. It clearly was NOT something he had eaten as I had been told all for three days... I know Labs eat things they should not and it happens a lot but somehow I knew all along this was more serious.
When my Vet told me she thought it might be Addison's all I could think of was, that's something humans get... the vet, Melissa said, if that's what it is, it's treatable.. All I could say was, "let's do it". The first year was tough because I was learning how to take care of him and it was a rough road because the Florinef just was not working well for him. I was not going to give up on my boy no matter what. 7 months after being diagnosed I was able to get percorten imported into Canada and life changed for Raider and for me.. I had my boy back.... It is an truly amazing drug..

While today I celebrate Raider's amazing journey with Addison's I am sad as well because a member of the Addison dogs support group that I belong to had her dog ( 1.5 yrs old ) euthanized because she felt she could not control the Addison's. Never once did she ask for our help, she only posted to the group to tell us she had euthanized her dog... The group is filled with so many people who will go to any lengths to do whatever it takes to get their dogs well and keep them that way no matter what it takes and this is very difficult for me. One member I know would have taken the dog in a heartbeat.. They all deserve what my boy gets but sadly they don't all get it..

Rest in peace my boy..

Thanksgiving 2010

We had the pleasure of sharing Thanksgiving with lots of friends this year. Our hosts were our neighbours Sally and Bob. The food was amazing! I ate so much last evening that I still am not hungry this morning, and Sally was worried there was not going to be enough food.. Ha.. we could have all eaten for a week.

The whole crew telling me to hurry up so they can eat...

I should have counted the number of desserts and taken some pictures... I was holding my personal favorite a cranberry something or other that April made and it was ynmmy. They were all so good. Next year I think we should eat dessert first so I can have more..

Of course all the kids were having a great time as ususal.

Emma, Raider, Molly and I went to the 2010 SHAID Wag and Walk yesterday. Emma raised $88 all on her own for the walk I am soooo proud of her. She borrowed Molly to walk who is owns my good friend Lois Wootten. Molly is a senior and is almost 11yrs. She and Caley went to puppy clsses and later to obedience and agility together. Molly and Emma hit it off so well together. Molly christened Emma ( Emma carried her first poop bag on the walk ) hehe..

On Tuesday I lost a friend.. Today with his family I celebrated his life and our friendship. George you were a wonderful friend and an honourable man. I will miss you..

George A. Wootten 74, of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, passed away on September 22, 2010, after a lengthy illness. George was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on March 4, 1936 to George R. and Lillian E. (Kennedy) Wootten. George was a member of the R.C.M.P. for 35 years. During that time he was posted in the Northwest Territories, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan. He retired in 1993 and relocated to Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. He leaves to mourn his wife of 47 years, Lois (Mitchell) Wootten, his daughter, Jane, (Jay), his son, George, (Heather), his brother, Ken, (Diane), his sisters Georgia Jordan and Bev Hogan, his Aunt Hilda Byrne and his friend Elizabeth Andrews. His constant companion of ten years, Molly, his Golden Retriever, will miss him deeply. At George’s request, there will be neither a visitation, nor a funeral service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Raider loved flyball and do did I. I can hardly wait for the next class. He wasn't used to the jumps but we just walked him through them.. I will get a jump or two built so he gets used to them. He did great with targeting and by the end of class was using both paws!!

Mr. Simon

Just thought I would update everyone ( all 7 of you hehe ) on Mr. Simon, as the neighbourhood children have decided to call him instead of just plain ole Simon.
He adores the children, all of them! He is becoming the neighbourhood cat. We live off the main road and he was obviously an outdoor cat and we just cannot contain him in the house even though we tried.. He spends time every day with any neighbour who happens to be out in their garden or roasting hot dogs by a campfire ( yes we live in the country ). He is always on the lookout for a back scratch. Considering how badly he was abused he certainly has a lot of trust in people.
When I get home from work everyday he comes bounding across the lawn to greet me and then becomes my shadow, even following me to the field when I take the dogs for a run. He also likes to go along and supervise when the dogs all go swimming.. He is always in every night and sleeps on the bed with us and at least two of the dogs.. He gets the best spot on the bed..

To remind you of what he looked like in May.. Here is his picture ( May 2010 ) two weeks post amputation and the day I met him and decided he was mine. He was about 7lbs then and weighs 12 now. It is hard to believe it is the same cat.

We survived Earl

Earl came ashore as a Cat 1 so it was not as bad as Jaun. There is certainly damage and lots of trees went down but we were spared any serious damage. The only thing that happened here was we lost Bill's building ( metal pole frame with plastic cover ) and when it went it damaged his van. Now before any of you feel any sympathy for him, let me tell you the story.. The building was over at our daughters for a couple of weeks so they could use it for a yard sale ( it is very big ) and afraid that it would go down in the hurricane Angie wanted it moved and I suggested that it be taken down rather than moved.. I mean it's a wind catcher. But Bill and friends moved it and Bill insisted it would not go anywhere ( sound familiar ladies ). He put lumber down on the frame and drove his Miata in it.. I suggested that was a big mistake but what did I know. At the height of Earl we could see it moving. As I was on the phone calling my son in law for help Bill said, "I'll get rope and tie it down" ( like that was going to help ) There were too many things for this to crash into.
While I waited for Bill and my Steven to show up with tools ( Bill was looking for rope ) I stood on one of the poles that was in the air and almost immediately it lifted 3 more feet. Not sure whether to jump off or hang on, I hung on and it did drop and then I got my ass off of it. It was like a gaint balloon. The only thing that kept it from going was the fact that now it was wedged against Bill's van which he so thoughtfully parked beside it. As we worked to get it taken apart ( in torrential rain as well ) you could hardly see or get a grip on the poles to pull them apart once the bolts were out. Neighbours Bob and Sally showed up and the extra hands certainly helped get it safely down with no more damage to anything or anyone. Men never listen... As I can say was good thing it was his Van that got damaged and not my car...

Surgery Day

Well my big brave boy has had his surgery and it is a lipoma. Paula showed it to me and it looked like a small brain with all the ridges etc.. weird. They checked to make sure it was not a mast cell hiding in there somewhere. He also had a light dental cleaning done as that was all he needed, brushing their teeth pays off! His blood work was perfect for an almost 10 yr old dog..
He has mostly been sleeping since I brought him home and this time NO swelling like the last time. Back in 5 days for a recheck and then sutures out in 14 days..
I sure feel better now that it is out!

Paula thinks it is a lipoma but even with the needle biopsy she is not completely sure. I chose not to send it out to the lab. Fairly certain it is not mast cell though. But I have decided it is best to have it taken out and then have a sample sent to the lab. This one came up really quickly and considering the postion of this one ( he will be walking on it soon as it is in a bad spot on his foot ) I don't want to leave it get any bigger..

Chauncy has another lump, this time on his other foot. It feels different so I am hoping it is not a return of the cancer. It is in a bad spot like the last one as well. It has been almost a year so I have my fingers crossed. We have a Vet appointment this morning at 10am.

At The Beach

My friend Adina is finally visiting from Oregon. I went to visit her last year and had an amazing time, so now I am showing her our home.. We have been eating some wonderful seafood, doing lots of fun things. Yesterday we went tidal bore rafting and it was a blast.. Emma joined us and i think she still has a smile on her face..
today we went to Risser's beach and took Raider.. he had a great time and here are few pictures to prove it..

It's A GIRL

Ang and Steven have gone to England and France and the girls are staying with us. They ae having a great time. The dogs all think that Aselin is a gift, they follow her around all day hoping she will A. either drop whatever she is eating or B. feed them whatever she is eating.. She does plenty of both and gets quite a kick out of it.

Aselin having her first whole peach at the beach, she loved it and the mess got washed off easily in the ocean..

Aselin has decided that Caley is her favorite and her best friend. She goes around now and kisses all the dogs noses while they are sleeping.

Bad Timing

On Friday evening I was doing some gardening and I went to get some gardening fabric, jumped off the step and landed on a bottle. My foot rolled one way and my knee the other and it hurt.
I finally gave in and went to the hospital today and I have a broken bone in my foot. This is so not fun. Work is crazy and I need to take a week off to rest and elevate my foot.. can't see me resting.. The timing really stinks. We are looking after Emma and Aselin when Ang and Steven go to England starting on July 6th and I was planning to take them camping at Jellystone.. That is still going to happen no matter what.. The dogs will stay home with Bill but I am not disappointing the girls. Aselin tells everyone she is going to "Jellystone" when anyone asked her where she is staying when Mom and Dad go away.
So it's crutches for now... we will see how long those last.

Well Tramp has finally stopped hissing at Simon, they even were on the same chair the other day.. Progress for sure.

Simon has been with us just over two weeks and yesterday he got out and when I picked him up and headed to the house he had a fit... he scratched and bit at me.. He is a tom after all and I doubt he ever spent much time in anyone’s loving home. Today I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and let him out. I know, I know cats live longer if they are inside cats. But there is no way I am going to be able to keep him in. I have a fenced yard and the dogs can come and go as they please with the deck door open and now they can't so we decided to see what would happen. Well he wandered and then came back to hang out with me and the other furkids as I did my landscaping. He rolled in the grass and seemed to love it. After spending all day outside with me he came in and ate and then curled up on my bed for a nap. Now I feel better.. He really is home..

Another Simon Update

Simon got his sutures out yesterday and I met the vet who spent a lot of time and energy saving him. All I can say is wow... she did great for him all pro bono.. He was covered in sores, ulcers, he needed drains, lots of meds and lots of time before she could operate and amputate his leg.. She isn't convinced the people who brought him to her were not the owners.. They made sure it was not going to cost them any money for leaving him with her...

Oh well we have him now and he is doing really well!!!

His Vet is Dr. Beverly Greenlaw,1255 Oakland Rd.. NS.. for anyone who needs a good vet. She looks after exotics as well.

Simon Update

Well Simon is fitting in quite well. He did a nice job of sucking up to Bill I must say. I picked him up to show Bill and he immediately head butted Bill's chin and started purring.. just like we practiced...

Tramp is still hissing at him every time he is anwhere close to her but they are both eating and drinking ok so no worries there. He goes tomorrow to get his sutures out. I think they have been in too long and are causing a problem as they are weeping. I have given him the run of the house now, errr... really he decided he was getting the run of the house so I agreed.. He actually jumped up on my lap when I was working in the office tonight and he likes to keep me in his line of sight. If I head for the bedroom he is the first up on the bed. Last night he slept on our bed with us and two of the dogs. Chauncy is scared of him I think, he refuses to get on the bed when Simon is on it... See Simon made the mistake of walking close to one of Chauncy's stuffies and I think he is afraid Simon is going to steal them. So Chauncy grabs them quick and runs...

Introducing Simon

This is Simon, the newest member of our family.. As most people know I don't think of myself as a cat person but I fell head over heels in love with Simon. I decided that if our 19 yr old cat was ok with it Simon was living with us.. As you can see he is a tripawd. His leg was amputated 2 weeks ago. We think he was hit by a car and the leg healed without treatment into a hook and when he was rescued his leg was a mess as he was trying to walk on his elbow, and it had to be amputated. He was found in a ditch. He is getting around fine, and he is even jumping already. He still has sutures in, so I need to check on whether they are dissolving or need to come out. The first picture was taken yesterday by Velma before I got him. Look at that face, he is so adorable. His name fits him too!

This picture is of him settled quite nicely on my bed.. He doesn't look stressed by anything to me.. he is eating and drinking fine so no worries there. He needs to put on a little weight so will work on that.

Guess he likes it here.. what do you think?

Simon is great with dogs but I have not introduced him to mine yet, I want him to settle in a bit so for now he is in my bedroom. Tramp was not impressed at all. She hissed at him and went to sit on her window sill. Her nose is out of joint about another cat in the house.. You would think she would be grateful I didn't bring another dog home..

Oh by the way Bill hasn't met him yet or even knows I was bringing him home... What's he going to say, I mean tomorrow is Mother's day, I am sure there is a rule somewhere that says Mom's get what they want for Mother's day..

Just want to start off by saying that I have tremendous respect for Vets and all they do. I so appreciate the care my Vet gives my furkids...
Anyone that knows me or that has read my blog knows I have a dog (Raider) with Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism). I volunteer on the Yahoo Group Addison Dogs helping people with their newly diagnosed dogs.. Yes I am one of those dreaded online people who give suggestions on Canine Addison's ..

I am not a Vet and I make sure to tell people that, and I also tell people not to make changes to their dogs medications without talking to their Vets.
But I do know how to manage a dog with Addison's disease.

We have vets who join our list to get information or who have their own Addison's dogs and want help. We generally have the latest treatment info, and often more up to date than many GP Vets have.
We see everything from people who will do everything they can for their dogs to ones who put their dogs down when they get the diagnosis.
We see people who have great Vets and the dogs get the best care. We also see people who have Vets that either don't care or slept through Veterinary school or at least endocrinology. Now I realize that Addison's in not a common disease and it is often misdiagnosed, it is called "The Great Pretender" as it mimics lots of other things including Kidney disease. Vets certainly don't see this everyday. But can't they look it up... for crying out loud.

One of the best drugs out there to treat Addison's is Percorten V (desoxycorticosterone pivalate). But it is not available everywhere so many parts of the world they must use Florinef. I have used that drug as well but hope to never have to go back to it for my boy.

As I said we see the good and the bad in both owners and Vets..
My rant today is on the Vets who could use some education on Addison's disease, so if anyone has suggestions on how to get the message out I would appreciate it because educating one Vet at a time is slow..

For example today we get a Vet who tells us that he is fine with reducing the percorten dose but he does it by reducing 25% at a time but he doesn't test the lytes ( electrolytes, specifically the sodium, potassium and chloride )because and I quote, " I am not a fan of testing the lytes because they are inaccurate and questionable" ... I'm sorry but WTF... so instead he reduces the dose and if the dog is fine in a month he reduces it again.. great way to put the dog in Addison's crisis I'd say. The lytes test/BUN are the most important tools when dosing to effect..

Or the vet who reruns the ACTH test monthly to see how much pred to give the dog... another WTF ... The ACTH test if done correctly the first time is a diagnostic test for Addison's, not a management tool, there is no reason with Addison's disease to do it again unless this was a Cushing's dog turned Addisonian and you want to be sure it is not returning to a Cushing's state.

Then there is the Vet who reruns the ACTH test to make sure the dog is getting enough Percorten V... again WTF.. it measures cortisol not Aldosterone. So again a waste of money.

Or the vet who refuses to lower the percorten dose even though the dogs K is 3.8 ( 3.4 - 5.8 ) at day 28 and just gives another full dose of percorten or increases the dose because the dog gained 3 lbs... another WTF, that's like giving more insulin to a diabetic dog whose blood sugar is already too low.
Don't these vets know anything about 'dosing to effect" or using the lowest effective dose..???

Then there are the vets who have the dogs on prednisone for a week before they run the ACTH test. Prednisone interferes with the test and can cause a false positive for Addison's. Dexamethazone can be used in the short term and it doesn't have any real effect on the ACTH test other than to sometimes reduce the pre stim result a bit. But the post stim test is the biggie anyway and it has no effect on that.
We see on average a couple of dogs a month who are misdiagnosed with Addison's because of a false postive on the ACTH test because of pred being used before the ACTH test. When they are taken off of it and supported on dex until the pred clears their system they pass the test.

Or the dog who fails the ACTH test but has perfectly normal lytes but the Vet puts them on either percorten or florinef anyway. These dogs only need a steroid replacement.. They don't need the other meds.
Now I realize they can transition to Typical Addison's but that happens in less than 20% of cases.. so no need to put them on it until they actually do need it.

I don't expect a Vet to know everything but I do expect that if they don't know something that they would try and find it out..
So any advice or suggestions on how you would talk to a Vet who does some of these things?

We had a fine needle aspirate done of the lump and vet feels sure it is a fatty tumor. It however is located in a bad spot that can grow into the muscle and interfere with walking etc so if it grows much bigger that thing is coming out. It is in the same place Buddy's was ( his was huge ) and he had surgery several times and it took months to heal.. So I will keep a close eye on it and if that thing gets any bigger out it comes..

It has been raining all day here so I went out with Emma and we picked out new stuffy's for the furkids. We got them for 25 cents a piece at frenchies. They loved them, you can just see Tramp staying out of the way on the chest.. smart cat.. Caley and Raider tugged and tugged..

This is Cooper and "HE" owned Velma and Howard..

Cooper came to them as a rescue that no one else wanted. He however, was very much wanted by Velma and Howard. Cooper and Howard were together "all the time." Coop went everywhere with Howard, including to work every day.. He loved his Tim bits and he always got his share..

Late last fall Cooper was diagnosed with cancer and he had his front leg amputated. I want you to know that this NEVER slowed Cooper down for a minute, he chased a ball with the best of them including my dogs. He and Raider were pretty good friends.

I have 3 grandchildren, Emma the oldest at 10, Aselin 2 1/2 and Desmond 2 yrs 3 mos. I get to see the girls pretty much every day as we are lucky enough to live very close. Emma travels to school with me most days as she takes french immersion at one of my schools and where I just happen to have my office. How cool is that... Desmond I don't get to see as much as he lives in Ontario but I did get to be there when he was born and that was one of the greatest moments of my life. I even got to cut the cord. His Daddy got a little weak in the knees at that point. Now the BEST news is now Maddie is expecting again and so in November Desmond will be getting a little brother or sister. It's too soon to tell yet as Maddie is just 9 weeks so stay tuned to find out if it will be a boy or girl!! We are totally overjoyed and we are now going to plan a trip to Ontario for the birth of our next grandchild.. Mom and Dad have asked us to be there this time as well, we did not get pushy and ask...we waited and they asked us... So now I am so excited again.. My lap is not going to be big enough for all four!

Now for all my friends who know Chauncy, they know he is very vocal, he is a loverboy.. No one has ever exclaimed that is a smart lab.... trust me no one. But he is smart like a fox.. He can figure things out that the other two would never think about. Like how to get the lid up on the dog proof garbage can, 30 seconds flat! Then how to get the lid up on the little compost bin under the sink... 10 seconds and that includes opening the cupboard door. But it took us humans 3 years to figure out how to keep him out of it without a lock on the cupboard. Get this we turned the bin around backwards.. sad it took us that long to figure that out.. But I want to show you Chauncy's GREATEST trick ... well it's his only trick really but never mind you will love it...

The Victim is Mom...

The one who feeds, exercises, plays endless games of ball.. This poor innocent sandwich (such as it was) was to be my work lunch. It was just sitting on the counter (well back) just waiting for me to go to work.

Suspect #1

Raider, 75lbs, 4 yrs old with a history or counter surfing.. previous sandwich theft, chicken theft, Prime rib roast theft, well ok he has a LONG record.. But he was not found at the crime scene. That does not necessarily mean he is innocent, it just means he heard Mom coming and made a fast getaway. Currently on probation for toast left.

Chauncy 69lbs 9 yrs old.. Found at crime scene.. also has a history of counter surfing, food theft although record has been clean for some time.. well other than the coffee thing that happened... Probation period is over.. he however cannot seem to look me in the eye with those beady little eyes..

So I ask you, who is guilty? Raider or Chauncy?

Caley is looking pretty good here. She is really active for a 10 yr old but has started to slow down and put on weight this last yr.. almost 10lbs.. So in for a checkup and blood work.. it was all perfect. So we decided to try metacam to see if that would help. It has made a big difference, she is like a puppy again.. She must have some achy joints.. So we need to get the extra weight off and hopefully that will help too. It kind of snuck up on us.

Raider as always checking stuff out to see if it's edible.. He would not want to miss something.

It's my stuffy and no one can have it.. Chauncy was even worried Mom was going to take it, I kept telling him I have my own.

Raider 3 years of Living Life Large with Addison's!!

On Oct 19, 2006 Raider was diagnosed with Primary Typical Addison's Disease. He came to us on May 30th 2006 as someones throw away.. I ask you does he look like a throw away... No answer needed as far as I am concerend. My initial plan was to find him a good home, I already had 2 Labradors and did not need a third. Well at least that was the story I gave my husband.. You have to tell them something right?
There is a long story about how he came to us but that's for another day.

I fell head over heels in love with this boy and there was no way I was giving him up.
We got him on May 30th and he was sick on and off all summer, but nothing serious, the Vet put it down to him eating things he should not have, he is a Lab after all.. But then he refused food and I knew deep down something was really wrong. A vet visit and several calls over 4 days and he was still no better.
On Oct 19th 2006 in the afternoon the 4th day when I came home from work to check on him he did not meet me at the door. I was scared... I put Raider in the car and took him to the clinic and I had to get help to get him in.
One of the senior Vets was on duty and she immediately knew he was very ill. Very quickly she told me he either was in renal failure or he had Addison's and she felt strongly it was Addison's. She told me Addison's was treatable and all i could think of was President Kennedy had it.. Weird what comes to your mind.
He was treated very aggressively and about 12 hrs into treatment he peed. I was never so happy to see a blanket peed on.. I cried. Not long after that he was able to stand again. But for the most part he laid with his head on my lap and rarely moved. He was started on Florinef the next day and he responded so well.

Well three years has gone bye and he is now on Percorten and a very small daily dose of predniosne. We only stayed with Florinef for 7 months as Raider did not do well on it, it never properly controlled his lytes even when he got to 2.2mg a day yes that's right ( 22 tablets ).
But percorten has been a miracle for him. It got immediate control of his lytes and I got my boy back... Here's to a great Vet, one who listens, and values my opinion.

So many people told me to have him put down when he was diagnosed ( many made very rude comments, and you know who you are ).. telling me it is "just a dog" and not worth the money.. But he is MY dog and it's my money and I don't tell anyone else how to spend their money.

I would not change a thing, Raider and his Addison's has taken me on a wonderful journey. I have met fantastic people ( you know who you are ) and many wonderful dogs, all with Addison's who live healthy lives!!

Turkey Day!

Well it's really Thanksgiving but to the furkids it's Turkey day... They always get turkey ( don't worry they get nice lean meat, no skin and the drippings they get have the fat removed.) I am not looking for any more vet visits as much as I like my vet..
They are now all napping peacefully..

Wag and Walk

Well yesterday Emma and I took Raider and participated in the 2009 wag and walk to raise money for the Shelter. We had a great time. Raider proved to be a champ at the underwater hotdog eating contest... No time for a picture trust me... He was a little annoyed at me for not allowing him in the ice cream cone eating contest so we did give him a plain cone with no ice cream, as a treat.. He did manage to get lots of treats including a oatmeal cookie at the rest stop. We were asked if we wanted a cookie and he accepted before anyone opened the dog cookie jar and helped himself to a cookie from the basket on the table, just one though and I swear he didn't drool on any of the others...
He refused to go in the dress up contest though he does have some dignity.... Although they were cute as the above picture shows.. Raider plans to go back year to raise more money for the doggies that don't have a homes and I guess we will go along with him.

It is so tough to get a good picture of all three dogs with me in the picture.. My patient son in law has helped me out several times. Good thing the pictures are digital. They are never looking in the same direction, someone always is yawning, licking their lips or somewhere else or getting up to go give Steven a kiss or picking at each other... Anyway I am about to give up, but here is one from today... What do you think? A good looking crew or what...

Just about the time I found the "lump" on Chauncy I ordered the book, "Speaking For Spot" Be the advocate Your Dogs Needs to live a Happy, Healthy Life by Dr. Nancy Kay DVM.

I have to admit I was skeptical but it's a great book that everyone with pets should read. This book will help you navigate the world of veterinary medicine.. It is easy to read, flows nicely and is packed with good practical information... If you own a dog read this book...

A post the other day by LittleVet , Negative Prognostic Indicators got me thinking.

I am a Moderator on the Yahoo Group Addison Dogs. It's a large group with about 30 new members a week. We try to educate owners on the different treatment options for their Addisonian dogs. We help them find ways to get their medications cheaper and in many more cases than I care to admit we help them educate their Vets on the proper diagnosis and treatment of an Addisonian ( no offense meant to the vets out there who already do a great job with their Addisonians). I digress though that is the topic for a whole other post.

As I said we get new members all the time and we know it's not good for the dog when:

1. In the membership application they tell you twice how concerned they are about the cost of medication but never mention that they care about their dog. ( these are the ones who rarely get lytes done and and the dog is always on the edge of crisis )

2. In their first intro post to the group they tell you three times they spent $2500 on diagnosis alone but never once tell you they love the dog.

3. They tell you the dog just got out of the ER that day and they ask how to get the dog to stop pi**ing ( their word not mine) on the carpet because they can't take much more. ( this dog is making it's last trip to the vet real soon)

4. The dog has been home for 48 hrs but drinking and peeing so much they know it is suffering and they can't bear to watch it any longer and they can't see spending all this money on a dog who is suffering. ( dead dog walking )

5. They ask what happens if they just stop treating the dog.. ( we beg them to rehome or at the very least take the dog to their Vet for euthanization rather than let it suffer such a death)

6. They tell you their Vet suggests they euthanize because the dog will never be the same ( this after they find out the medication is for life )..

7. They tell you they are expecting a baby and they tell you how much they really love the dog.. ( the dog is history, although they may ask for help rehoming )

Why do I do this... oh yeah I love Addisonian's like Buddy, Ben, Vita, Becky, TJ, Taz, Millie, Tess, Riley, JJ, Tallie, Rudy and oh yes my boy Raider...

Ok it's pretty windy and very wet now.. The picture is not great but my camera was in a bag.. The wind was driving the rain so hard I could barely keep my eyes open. The water is over the rocks here and I have never seen that before, about 4 feet above the high tide mark. I am so glad we still have power when many do not.

Hurricane Bill

Ok we are right in the path of Hurricane Bill... hmmm how did this one get named after my husband... People here in Nova Scotia are certainly preparing more than they did for Juan a few years ago.. We have started to get things in and batten down the hatches.. This is only the second hurricane to hit in my lifetime... I just may take the furkids to the basement when this begins to hit to get away from all the picture windows... Bill keeps saying it will be fine but who knows. I like to plan a little for stuff like this. We have a generator this time so even if we loose power we can still keep some things going. maybe we will be lucky and Bill will head out to sea..

This is Buddy, he owns Adina and Brian, two very good friends of mine in Oregon. Buddy also has Primary Typical Addison's like Raider. Both Raider and Buddy take the miracle drug "percorten" and a very small daily dose of prednisone to control their Addison's... The first picture is one of Buddy that will be in the Addison's Dogs calendar. I met Buddy in May and he sang to me..

Emma and I took Raider and went to Crescent Beach. They both had a blast. He would chase balls in the water all day. There were lots of other dogs but he could not have cared less. Mom brought the ball and the chucker, so he was in heaven.

Looking Better

Well another dressing change behind us and hopefully we get through the weekend without a vet visit. He goes back Monday. He has that spark back in his eyes. Poor boy now has an ear infection on top of everything. Because of a friend ( Big Thanks =D ) I now have lots of good journal info on Mast cell treatment including the new drug Palladia.. It's not available in Canada yet but I feel better being prepared. My highlighter will be busy today.
